Jibaro

Jibaro is a MASTERPIECE. The animation is so incredibly realistic at times that there were moments I genuinely questioned whether I was watching something animated or not. You don’t need to watch the other episodes beforehand since Love Death & Robots is an anthology, every episode is completely different.

I love LD&R overall, but I wanted to talk about this episode specifically because it’s my favorite. It’s short, but emotionally and thematically insane. It explores themes of greed, colonialism, toxic relationships, sexual violence, with tiny details and symbolism that can easily be missed on the first watch. It’s the kind of episode that can have multiple interpretations which I love, and every time I’ve rewatched it, I’ve noticed something new.

As a woman, I thought it was devastating, relatable in some ways, and empowering in others. There’s no dialogue, but it communicates so much through movement, sound, and the art. And that final scene…holy shit. The music builds with the plot, making the ending SO emotionally intense. It leaves me feeling overwhelmed in the best way every possible every. single. time.
